The Gloria Steinem wig deserves its own award.
I think Cate Blanchett does a good job of playing Phyllis Schlafly as the unhinged nut she was. But the narrative makes her a little too Girl Boss and Lean In-esque.
This subplot about Phyllis handwringing about a potential virulently racist member is something. Phyllis was probably saying it with the hard -er herself so why even do this?
We are supposed to believe that these 1970s-era, small, all-white Southern Illinois town residing conservative white women, are upset by being associated with racists.
I can suspend disbelief for a lot of things, but y'all are not about to get me to believe that a group of white women in Alton, Illinois in 1973 (or today for that matter) are tripping over themselves to be inclusive in any sense of the word.
This plot line is literally, "Yes, they are trying to stop all progressive legislation BUT they weren't racist!" Please give it a rest.
They may not have had white hoods in their closets but we're not going to act like they weren't calling their maids spooks behind their backs either.
