It's now clear as day. @realDonaldTrump isn't interested in scaling-up testing, contact tracing, isolation, PPE, training thousands to do tests, help manage the next phase, nor foster social distancing in any way by offering ordinary Americans more support. #coronavirus 1/
If he was, he could go to the podium at any one of his daily briefings & endorse the plans that are now peak consensus on the roadmap out of this crisis. Like a child, he just keeps asking when can we re-open, when can we re-open? Like it's all a big Xmas present for a child. 2/
He could put in motion ALL the steps we need now. Calling on Congress to appropriate bills for a massive public health scale-up. Calling on industry to make the commodities we all need. Calling on Americans to stand up to volunteer to be testers, assist in other ways. 3/
The protests by Trump loyalists yesterday scattered around the country are @POTUS' id. These misguided people, risking their own health by their actions yesterday know more of what beats in the heart of @realDonaldTrump than we do. 4/
He doesn't care about public health, real lives. We are as remote to him as sheep down in a valley looked over by an incompetent, bored and petulant boy. Dots. Small dots. Meaningless. A distraction, an annoyance. 5/
As @Austan_Goolsbee has said: the first rule of virus economics is: stop the virus. It doesn't matter to the President what the right thing to do is. His advisors are family members, financiers, business people with little expertise, experience to guide us. What do they want? 6/
For this all to be over quick. So they look for the smallest signals to meet their needs. Some states have less than 1000 cases now? Hooray, let's reopen them. Is it wise, no but it's what they want. And rich little boys always get what they want. 7/
So this isn't going to end well. More suffering, both more deaths & economic carnage. Because no one can say the emperor has no clothes, that the boy-king can't just do what he wants, as @realDonaldTrump has said: "when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything." 8/
