There are many reasons that the White House response to the pandemic has been a disaster, but chief among them has to be this: they honestly don't give a damn about human life, and resent the idea they should even pretend to. https://twitter.com/MikeOkuda/status/1250673926297944064
Since the beginning of this there has been from the Republican regime and its propaganda apparatus only one priority, and that is creating a narrative favoring the president no matter what the outcome—which makes them largely indifferent to the outcome.
The enemy for Republicans is not the virus, but criticism—particularly valid criticism. Investigation—particularly valid investigation.

They don't attack the virus. They attack journalists, governors, experts, even front-line medical workers, who dare question their narrative.
This is why there is no real narrative relevant to the virus. The narrative is relevant to whatever the criticism is, and utterly, utterly, utterly indifferent to people's lives.
If the criticism is the tanking economy? Americans back to work! Cure is worse than the disease!

If it's the death rate? Back inside!—and blame someone else! A governor! A female one!

A stimulus? Hold it up so trump can attach his death camp fence of a signature to each check!
It's WHO's fault!
It's Obama's fault!
It's the fault of the governors!
Trump's every action was perfect!
Everything he did saved lives!
The things he failed to do: Fake news! Nasty questions!

None of the responsibility! All of the authority!

The narrative is the only priority
Any remedy must be seen as a gift from our great leader, for whom the recipients must express only gratitude, no matter how late, no matter how insufficient.

This is only possible if remedy was never the priority.

The narrative is the only priority.
Deaths must be seen as necessary losses when taken individually. When taken in aggregate, they must always be compared favorably to some other number, which would be worse.

This is only possible if saving life was never the priority.

The narrative is the only priority.
Ask Trump if 60,000 dead is a tragedy, he'd take it as a personal insult—it's less than 100,000!

If 100,000 die, that will be less than 200,000

In February he said it would be 0

In truth, to Trump 2 million dead and 0 dead are equal values.

The outcome was never the priority.
2 million dead will mean the exact same thing to Trump and his party and his propaganda apparatus as 0 dead, which is this: that he is blameless, and did a perfect job, and any suggestion otherwise is mutiny and treason.
All this is only possible from people indifferent to outcome, indifferent to human life, angered by the suggestion that they should be.

They don't care if people live or die. They only want to be able to choose if they do.
The White House response is not pandemic management. It's blame management.

It's a strategy that can only be enacted by people entirely indifferent to human life. https://twitter.com/ThePlumLineGS/status/1251187872583032832?s=20
It's an inescapable truth that Trump, elected Republicans, far right media, and white evangelical christians (as well as other white supremacist groups that comprise the GOP base), all see other humans as disposable.

By inescapable, I mean they keep saying it out loud.

This is what happens when you have a ruling party with no interest in governing, and a leader with no interest in outcomes and no regard for life.

All these numbers are interchangeable to him. He's utterly indifferent.

There exists no number of dead so high that the Trump administration will not lavishly praise itself for it.

For those unconcerned with outcomes, with no concern for human life, 2 million dead and 0 dead are of equal value, and mean success equally.

No matter the outcome it will to Republicans and Trump always only mean one thing, that Trump was right.

This makes Republicans and Trump essentially indifferent to the outcome.
