I'm at a seminar organised by @AboutLoyalty on how COVID-19 is changing charitable giving. Starting by introducing their Sentiment Tracker. Some changes are elastic (spring back), others plastic (the new normal).

* Never have individual supporters been so important. We have changed practically and emotionally.

* Older people better at following social distancing rules.
* changed behaviour
* growth of morale and energy
* people feeling challenged and scared

Strong trust in government but coupled with a strong feeling that we left it too late - maybe moving towards anger or blame.

People worrying about their basic needs.

What does this mean for fundraising?

There is an outpouring of humanity
People are giving - majority not changing that.

Lots giving to new charities (stated intentions)

Still a sense of hope. Optimism starting to pick up.

But not shared equally. Arts struggling to get cut through as causes, as opposed to elderly charities, for example.

How much is it a permanent shift?

Charities might be about to see an even bigger hit in donations.

If you haven't, start fundraising today!

Tone is so important.
Sense of togetherness.
Put ourselves in others' shoes. Empathise.

What problems can we solve? Not asking and taking. How can we be relevant heroes in lives of our supporters? How to be relevant? What content can we provide? Will then be reciprocated.
Change brings opportunities.

Do not sacrifice long term loyalty for short term cash.

Loyalty comes from commitment, satisfaction and trust. Deliver what supporters want and need.

Next up Zoe Cvijian on how Barnardo's have been affected.

Needed to focus on current impact and how it's affected children's services not long term work in their appeal.

Distilled into key cases for support that are relevant and tangible.

Doing new activity, particularly digitally. Public fundraising developing virtual events, fast tracked new campaign ideas, corporate team still talking to partners & prospects, as are philanthropy & trusts.

How? A lot of help from technology! Resource sharing.

Key learnings from the Barnardo's team.
