This is probably not the right time to be telling this story because of the global pandemic we are in but my heart aches for my community.
Newclare is a small township on the West of Joburg. It& #39;s relatively densely populated and renowned for its gangs and drug operations.
The people live in terrible conditions.
The people live in terrible conditions.
Since the dawn of democracy, not much has changed for the people of my community. Crime remains high. Gang related murders continue to take the lives of young people and limited opportunity means many are unemployed and without hope.
Many people live in Flats which were built by the Apartheid government. These structures were not built to last (max lifespan of about 30 years). We are well beyond that 30 year mark and the buildings have become structurally compromised.
This is not helped by the fact that are built on the water table and storm water system below them.
The neglect by the state at all levels is highlighted in this incident. We don& #39;t know what more to do. We have held countless meetings with government to no avail.
This, unfortunately is the reality for many communities in South Africa and it is incidents like these that make corruption and incompetence that much more unbearable.
The promise of a better life for all remains unfulfilled for the people of Newclare as poverty, unemployment and gang related crime continues to grip us.
Add to this the complete neglect by the state which is becoming increasingly unbearable. And if we take to the streets to demonstrate our anger? We most likely will be met with more violence, thisbtime meted out by the very state we entrust to take care of us.
Please pray for us. I don& #39;t know what more to do. God Bless Africa.
