I saw that Mauritius was trending yesterday bec of food, nice beaches and overall beauty. The island is indeed stunning. I spent 1month there for research exactly 2yrs ago for my EU Horizon2020 funded research on post-slavery societies.
Here, some of the history of the Island.
A history with Dutch (1598) settling in, French taking over (1715), British ripping wealth (1814). A history of pain for African, enslavement, land grabbing and compensation for plantation owners.
A history of mass graves, here when it rains, when it high tide, some bones resurface bec soil made easy for certain crabs to dig. Bones of enslaved.
A history of indentured servitude aft abolition. People from the Indian subcontinent, promised a better life or forced 2travel but in all cases ending in dire conditions and competing vs those of African descent 2survive.
Stories about women's lives are just ...
Today, dependence on tourism, new forms of apartheid w billionaires white SouthAfricans&Russians living in gated communities. African descent mostly at bottom of social ladder. Ecological fears & history of the Chagos in all minds.
BUT, a real success story of multifaith country.
