Dear Upcoming Artiste,

As promised, words from a July '19 survey I did with some of our rising independent artistes on what they'll expect from a record label, if they should sign to any.

Here's what Joeboy, Oxlade, Buju, Dunnie, Cill etc will expect from a record deal 👇
Joeboy:

“I don't exactly expect a house or car because I know I’ll pay back for all that. One thing I'd expect from a label is major PR, promotion and branding. Thankfully I have a small team of photographer, sound engineer, producer so the label wouldn’t need to do much...
on that part. And I guess that gives more leverage when negotiating deals”
Oxlade:

“Sorting every of my needs without having to compromise. Have a goal; Like, what do they want this artist to become in 2years”
Dunnie:

“I'd like to know their yearly budget for me. And how much they plan to spend on me during the course of the contract. Also, an exit clause if the said things aren't done within the 9months.”
Buju:

“Interest in the craft but not control of the craft, the choice of selecting my releases; capital and fair profit split”
Cill:

“I’d be interested in a label that won’t discard my sound in the name of being 'commercial' [read mainstream]. They should have the funds and network. The deal should be within a reasonable number of years”
Mo'Believe:

“Creative control most importantly! A solid plan. Solid and down to detail on everything (branding, imaging, promotion. A&R). Also, I’ll like to work with a team of people that are experienced and very goal-oriented, not just people who want to throw money around.
"Also, I need to see utmost belief in the Mo’believe brand.”
Paper Corleone:

“Firstly, I would request to see the budget, a detailed distribution plan. One which they can give me a documented guarantee that they will execute. I’ll try to negotiate a reasonable percentage of the profits."
"Most importantly, I would expect to own the right to my recording masters AFTER my contract expires.”
Bryan Mensah:

“As an artist who has been independent for quite a while I'm fully aware of how much the pros outweigh the cons in the long run of not being signed and therefore at this point, a label is only a shortcut for me to take to ensure that my career is mostly...
...stable and steady such that I wouldn't have to run shifts between a regular job and a music career just to make ends meet. I would want a label to give me full creative control for my production processes and also respect the direction on which I choose to take my...
...brand and always consider that when they are putting together marketing campaigns for any project that concern myself and my music. As an artist/producer, I'd also like to be given placement deals to be able to produce for other recognized artists in exchange for...
...an additional cut in my publishing or service fee of course.”
Ade:

“The most important thing is my artistic freedom, efficient and effective Team (PR, marketing, management etc) etc and a 60/40 deal for a deal of 4years, if the duration can be less than that but realistically at least, 4years”
