Today the ‘lockdown regulations’ (the law giving police and others the power to enforce lockdown) must be reviewed by Matt Hancock MP and either renewed/revoked or replaced.

Here is a detailed @HumanRightsCtte briefing paper on the regulations /1 https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/jt5801/jtselect/jtrights/correspondence/Chairs-briefing-paper-regarding-Health-Protection-Coronavirus-Restrictions-England-Regulation-2020.pdf
The regulations impose the most extensive restrictions on personal freedom since WW2 - for the legitimate aim of preventing the spread of Covid-19
They must, however, be revoked as soon as they are no longer necessary to prevent the spread of Covid-19 /2
Whilst the regulations are clearly necessary in general terms, there have been significant criticisms of the drafting (which is unclear in parts and inconsistent with government guidance) - and of police enforcement of them /3
Continued /4
It is highly likely that the regs will be continued for a further 21 days as the crisis continues and to change them a little would be adding more unnecessary confusion. But it is important to remember these have been passed by executive fiat with no Parliamentary debate /4
It is therefore essential that these regulations and how the police are enforcing them are properly scrutinised. However, with Parliament still in recess and these regulations requiring no Parliamentary approval I am not hopeful at present /5
I have written about how to improve the police response, it is still not clear whether the regular social media stories of overreach are representative or outliers but we need to know urgently https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/04/10/policing-coronavirus-lockdown-impossible-task-will-lead-wrongful/?WT.mc_id=tmg_share_tw /6
