This went up quick. The new Nine Elms underground station. Just a box with cladding and glass and little else.
TFL has really scaled back their architectural ambitions. Compare this with the beautiful and whimsical stations of old found throughout London.
It's such a massive structure, too. Must be at least 200m long, and only 2 storeys across its entire area! Why not build housing above it? Or a rooftop park? Or football pitch? Complete lack of imagination.
Arguably it fits right in with its neighbours, but such a missed opportunity to bring architectural quality into an area devoid of it.
How can we expect the private sector to build beautiful buildings if the public sector fails so miserably to lead by example?
There will be development over the station, apparently, designed by Grimshaw. It looks like it'll drag the architectural level of the area down even further.
