Everything about this tweet is wrong aside from the fact that its true to say some people believe in 5G conspiracy theories & have committed vandalism on the basis of that belief but who are those people you may ask? Well, they are less likely to be leave voters James Im afraid. https://twitter.com/mrjamesob/status/1250332294872588296
Remain voters were much more likely to get their news online than Leavers. So, in regards to ‘lies and fake news on social media’ the people who would be more exposed to such things would be....... thats right, Remain voters. https://twitter.com/risj_oxford/status/1205063276633178112?s=20
The older someone was the more likely they were to vote leave

The older someone is the less likely they are to get their news from social media

So *if* ‘lies and fake news on social media’ is a problem it is Remain voters we need to worry about in the main bc they are the ones who will be primarily exposed to it.
But even this premise is shaky. Look at anti-Vaxx beliefs. In đŸ‡ș🇾, black and hispanic ppl are more likely to be suspicious of vaccinations than whites (see screen-shots.) Are they more likely to be social media users than whites? No is the answer. Blaming social media is lazy.
Lazy assumptions debunked time and time again still being trotted out as axiomatic. Tiresome. https://twitter.com/DegenRolf/status/851385787128180737?s=20
There have been tons of studies like this but they just get ignored

We consistently over-state media influence on us *in general* https://mobile.twitter.com/robfordmancs/status/1235146439401103361
Bc it suits us to believe that when we lose a political fight it is bc the other side have been duped https://mobile.twitter.com/mattgrossmann/status/1247853017111638016
If anyone can be accused of spreading lies and fake news on social media it is James O’Brien himself. Bc there’s little evidence to support his thesis that we can blame social media for the British public voting leave in 2016, voting Tory in 2019 or for 5G conspiracy theories now
And the reason why this aggravates me so much is that it removes agency from the ppl who voted leave in 2016 and Tory in 2019. Reduces them to a cipher. I am one of those people. I have agency and I am not a cipher for your paranoid fantasies, thanks.
Oh dear. Retreated to the safety of her echo chamber. But at least before she went she provided a very robust argument to refute the numerous studies I have cited to buttress the arguments that I have made in this thread. Very robust argumentation indeed.
