I don't get the whole AU drama with MDZS getting out of control.
Like, we're all a bit ignorant on the topic, bc none of us is a Chinese gay cultivator living in the era of kingdoms & taoism. We should all do research and stop forcing perspectives on the work disrespectfully.

Not even the author herself can be held as a perfect example of what her canon is. There are always loose ties, but, also, the fact that there is a context (time period, geography, culture/society/religion) should always be considered, bc that also makes the characters.
Think about MDZS as a crossover of modern views projected as a period work. Ofc it may have it's vague inaccuracies (also, fiction lends to people being creative), but taking away the original context that forms the characters can be outright unfaithful?
Go ahead, make modern NYC coffee shop AUs and stuff, but always be aware and remember where the characters come from. A conservative country, a traditionalist and mainly elitist society, a fantasy with magic and monsters.
Take to heart and take seriously the things that matter (messages related to discrimination, to trauma, to war, to familial conflict), but also remember it's supposed to be a fun, magical, and entertaining piece of media to indulge in.
Do not let a work of fiction make you define real-life views. Fiction is fiction, and while it might provide meaningful take-aways for real life, it was basically just written as a story to be enjoyed.
Stop the discourse, be respectful, be patient. If you want to understand the cultural aspects of MDZS, ask for guidance. If you just wanted the whole BL thing, enjoy it in a peaceful way without disturbing others. If you have disagreements, discuss rationally and calmly.
And last, if you are like me (knows next to nothing about the context) remember, your background is very yours. Others have not lived/grown up like you, so don't enforce your views on others.
(I'll either regret this thread or no one will read it lol.)

I have grown up with a small grouo of people in the same city, circle of schools/unis/workplaces, by the same kinds of Boomers, and yet we are very different to each other, so don't think that race, nationality, or gender can be categorized in general ways.
You may have everything in common with a character (ex. Being Chinese, being LGBT/Being a Westerner LGBT or het fujoshi) either way, you are not going to be the same, so refrain from projecting.
Have a cute gif, bye
