Animal crossing is a purgatory simulation: a thread
To be completely transparent, tonight I went deep down the animal crossing conspiracy hole and found a video that talks about how animal crossing is purgatory. The video is linked but if you’d rather listen to my chaotic thread get ready
In earlier games if you reset your game or changed memory cards, a villager would greet you and welcome you back. But, when you reset the game your characters face would be replaced with A GYROID FACE
This represents that the gyroid really does hold the soul of your character. Anyways in conclusion I’m slowly going crazy in quarantine and I’m 99% sure this thread is out of order figure it out ig
So, in animal crossing your main character is a child. In a child’s world view, everything is simple. Animals are friendly and talk to you, getting money is easy, fossils, buying a house, etc. So animal crossing is basically the ideal world that a child would live in
But, everything is /too/ simple. Maybe that’s cuz it’s a kid’s game, but also hear me out. If a kid was in purgatory, this is what it’d look like. A theory of purgatory is that it’s essentially a waiting room until you accept what has happened and you get into heaven.
The video explains it as sort of the stages of grief, the last of which is acceptance. However, in purgatory you don’t necessarily know you are dead. There’s ways to figure this out over time, but distractions (yard work, tasks, bills), that are given to stop you from finding out
How did the child get into purgatory in the first place? Kids don’t have a concept of death which explains why they haven’t accepted death yet, but it’s likely from a car crash, trainwreck, or plane crash as that is what you arrive on at the beginning of the games historically
One of the craziest things is the gyroids in the game. They don’t really have a big purpose other than they appear everywhere. HOWEVER, they are canonically based on haniwas, which in the Japanese tradition are buried with bodies to protect their souls basically
It’s likely these appear everywhere because they represent the protected soul of your character while it’s figuring purgatory out. BUT HERE’S THE WILD PART:
