(Mute thread if you want)
I watched videos of specific moments and places in Resident Evil 3, and it got me thinking about why I like the story changes so much in the Remake. So many things didnā€™t make sense, especially some of the Nemesis encounters in the original.
Ok so the original nemesis encounters:
The choice system in the original while cool in a few instances, and couldā€™ve been worked into a few in the Remake possibly, I donā€™t think was necessary. Often it made no difference in the original really what you chose. But also,
many of the encounters made no sense or took the suspense out of the story. In the original, Jill encounters Nemesis at the top of the Clock tower. You either electrocute him or blind him and push him off(which no way Jill can push him over, especially his immense size in remake)
But more so besides the ridiculousness of that (electrocution makes actual sense). You have a story issue in two ways:first, Nemesis is either knocked out up top while she goes down the helicopter, which means he could wake up and follow her down either by jumping down or running
To catch up before the helicopter lands or as it does. Which means he could destroy it. That seems nonsensical in the story when heā€™s been shown to keep getting back up. The actual story follows an idea on this. Nemesis does destroy the copter after that encounter. Which leads me
To point two. Her encountering nemesis before that takes the suspense and dramatic effect of him destroying the copter, not just from the audience, but from the character. If you are Jill, you would be expecting he will get up so you have to book it to the copter, heā€™s there.
The counterpoint is that she would fearful of him being up on the clock tower, about to wake up. But the audience already knows heā€™s there. So theyā€™re not shocked when he does blow it up with his rocket launcher. And the copter wouldā€™ve needed time to land or position itself to
Drop a rope for her to escape. Also where would Carlos come in? Would he have been found? Or was she just going to leave Raccoon City? But in the original Nemesis does somehow get down, funds his rocket launcher he didnā€™t have up top for some reason, and shoots the copter.
Now, on the suspense part, we know as the audience in the original that part was definitely not the end. But for the character, I think it is A LOT more suspenseful and dramatic, and scary and hopeless if she thinks sheā€™s about to be saved and still thinks Nemesis got knocked off
The train way behind her, instead of up top. Also Carlos showing up and shooting the rocket launcher until it blows up always seemed funny to me. Plus the plot of nemesis just going and dying in a fire (but not really) after the boss battle and Jill being infected.
Also I think Iā€™m just gonna keep focusing on the clock tower part of the original for this thread, and keep trying to see why as a writer in development, that wouldā€™ve been cut (and as a writer period).

Which, next part. Jill getting infected. To me, it makes no sense to
Have Jill stay in the Clock Tower while Carlos then goes to the hospital for the cure. Now, I love how the Remake did this and everything they changed with the story and with the hospital. But the original handles it poorly to me. Largely because it makes more sense to
Bring her to the hospital. Now, the divergence here is that the story is very different at this point in the purpose for the location in both games. That is the biggest factor. However, the original has another issue. When Carlos comes back, he then leaves Jill to go handle
ā€œThingsā€. Itā€™s immediately after fighting Nemesis himself. Right outside the door to the chapel she was asleep in. So he passes through there again after they both discuss Nemesis and hear his voice outside the door. Nemesis knows theyā€™re in there. It makes no sense at all.
So after he leaves into thin air or Nemesis just says ā€œget outta here I donā€™t want youā€, Jill immediately faces him again. Fights him, and escapes. The entire clock tower section in the original makes no sense in most parts except for the initial beginning.
I would not have minded seeing the inside of the tower in the remake, if it served a good purpose. But it was a mess, with very little sense in the original. The music though and a few aspects of it and the design where great though. But the Remake made a big divergence here.
And for the better. Thereā€™s one aspect thatā€™s minor that bugs in the Remake. Thatā€™s Jill just kinda blowing it off that Nemesis falls into the water sinking down. She has experienced him not dying easily before so Iā€™m not sure why sheā€™d suddenly be unconcerned. However,
Thereā€™s a few things to pay attention here. One, sheā€™s pissed that he lives, but amused that he canā€™t swim and just sinks below. Also at this point she has witnessed Nicoholaiā€™s betrayal first hand, and sheā€™s tired and wary and has her mind on that. Then immediately, she gets
Into a conversation with Carlos on the radio which takes her attention to that, and then talking about the derailing of the train, everyone dying, the lost hope, and Nicoholai leaving them for dead. Sheā€™s distracted with her mind far away at that moment on the monster in the lake
Sheā€™s excited and frustrated and flustered, not thinking super clearly. So her guard is down. So her initial blow off of Nemesis falling into the lack, makes a lot more sense when you really think about it. A big reason is because her character is treated a lot more human
Than in the original. That helps the story and characterization, and relative and empathetic capacities with the audience. It helps you really think ā€œhow would I be reacting in that crisis, in each moment?ā€ I think thereā€™s too much nostalgia around the discourse on the game.
That said, yes, I wish it were a longer game. I do think the pacing is too much. But I love stories and characters too. And to me, it makes a lot of sense for the changes to a 21 year old story and game. I also wanted the Remake to be longer when I was watching the playthrough
I watched, because I didnā€™t want it to end. I did want more, and I think in the earlier parts they couldā€™ve done that. Maybe story DLC will add new story stuff and locations. But yeah, thatā€™s my late night analysis of a specific part of the plot that was changed in the Remake.
