This is Ezra Klein interviewing Sean McElwee and this description of two different “left” factions is a preview of what’s to come over the years, that there is a left faction that’s serious and willing to work within the Dem party and another that’s just bomb throwers.
Sean responds and goes onto say “him and AOC” believe in having the progressive movement being “in good standing” with the Democratic Party and that you then pick and choose fights to get some progressive legislation passed, but usually not the big stuff like M4A
I dont think he has a personal relationship with AOC so part of this is cynical to get people to think he’s not a sellout, but it’s just abundantly clear what the game plan is and I think there’s a real question of whether AOC is really gonna try and take this approach or not
On the merits though, this doesn’t fucking work. The Progressive caucus has cucked itself to Pelosi for years and years and they have nothing to show for it, zero leverage at all. Sean knows this, but he’s also a shitty careerist fuck
And now reaching the part where we see Sean’s endgame. He thinks attempting to mobilize/organize rural working class voters is not effective and that suburban women are actually way more liberal than we give credit for, and we should focus on suburban women and urban areas.
To give some credit, Sean clearly saw which way the wind was blowing, that the Dem Party is abandoning the working class and looking to replace them with suburban/pmc class people and he’s striking while the iron is hot
His whole argument for this is conservative Dems representative these non college white areas as if all this happens in a vacuum. Great stuff
But if we didnt ignore the suburbs we could have a Congress full of Katie Porters!!!
