Can I just rant real quick for no one to read, thanks.
I had an interview with a school in a fairly bougie area, “top rated” whatever. First question was “tell us about yourself” so I went on about my activities in highschool and how that influenced what I pursued in college etc.
THEN I get interrupted by this WHITE women for her to ask, “Well I meant what do your parents do for a living” aka we want to know if you come from a poor/disadvantaged background to help your admission to this program.
I understand affirmative action and trying to even out the playing field for those who don’t come from privileged backgrounds, but does it really have to be the focus of my application? do you want proof that my parents slaved away for me working labor intensive jobs—
—for you to even consider me for your program? Am I that bad of an applicant alone, without my background? Idk, just for regular college apps I barely focused on this and didn’t get in anywhere and know that I’m going through the application process again I’m cringing at having —
—to describe myself as disadvantaged and my parents as uneducated. It’s a part of my life that has helped me mature and become who I am. I really dislike giving it this negative connotation and framing it as a detrimental aspect of my childhood that “held me down”
idk the quarantine and this adderall got my mind doing backflips. i am also a cancer. that is all
