There's this widespread notion that silent films were black and white. They absolutely were not! The vast majority had some color, often applied using ingenious methods.

Like CYRANO DE BERGERAC (1925), which had every frame colored with hand-cut stencils.
The majority were either tinted (light areas colored) or toned (dark areas colored) or both at the same time. This scene from THE GREAT WHITE SILENCE has dark blue toning and yellow tinting.
And there was hand-coloring, a specialty of the French. The hand-colored version of A TRIP TO THE MOON only resurfaced recently and it's stunning.
Unfortunately, many silent films were archived on black and white safety film and their original colors were lost. (And colors could vary by nation of release, one color palette in Austria, another in Italy, etc.)
