I had this weird epiphany at Disneyland once... (part 1)
I was watching people stand in a line to get on a log that brought you up to some height and then brought you down crashing into some water.
People would throw their hands in the air and scream. It occurred to me at that moment how well off a lot of us are compared to our ancestors.
Not everyone obviously in the world, but certainly every single person in that park. We paid “good money” to get on rides that gave us cheap thrills just for the fuck of it. And if we had any spare money we stuffed ourselves with sugar.
I watched log after log, cycling between admiration and disgust. Admiration for how far we had come and disgust at how much we (royal we) didn’t seem to understand this progress.
So much was good in the world. We were in many senses - rich. Rich enough to fling ourselves around mindlessly. Rich enough to gorge on churros and rich enough to complain about every fucking thing.
However we were dumb enough not to realize how rich we were. How some amount of financial stability gives you time to complain and find faults. We are about to take a stark turn in a different direction.
I see headlines that media companies are trying to pump to promote controversy and nobody seems to care. People are overwhelmed right now. Every day there’s more people joining the masses who can’t afford to throw themselves on a damn log just for giggles.
We are going to see what real privilege looks like. That needle moves. There are no “safe spaces” where we are going. People won’t have the time. When you don’t have the luxury of time, you don’t have the “privilege” to complain about everything.
I look forward to when we can do stupid shit again, but not to when stupidity returns. Try to remember that when the “new normal” is here. Try to remember how lucky we are to be alive right now.
How lucky you can be just to be on a damn amusement ride.
And have a churro.
