So what is #mubb getting in DJ Carton? He's athletic, quick, and has the ability to score in multiple ways. More important, he's a definite point guard. Probably the best pure point since James, maybe Diener.
You can see the explosiveness here. He's tenacious around the rim and doesn't shy from contact. He does have a bit of an odd push to his shot, but we'll talk more about that later. And for athleticism, check the fake, cut, and poster at 2:05 against Nova:
Like many PGs, his turnover rate is high (25.9%) so he will give occasional headaches. But that's almost identical to McEwen with a higher assist rate (26.9 to 21.2) & usage (25.2 to 21.4), so he's creating more for himself and others.
It was correctly pointed out that he's not good off the dribble. In isolation, his 0.286 ppp is 3rd percentile. Jumpers off the dribble he scored just 0.44 ppp, which is 10th percentile. So that's the bad. But there's more good.
His catch & shoot numbers are insane. Overall, 1.579 ppp on catch and shoot plays. That's 99th percentile. 25th in the country out of 2,971 players & better than Markus Howard.
What I looked closely at was his numbers as a pick & roll ball-handler. That accounted for over 40% of Markus' possessions (0.947 ppp, 88th percentile). Carton was at 0.879, 80th percentile. Not quite as good, but still very good & a good fit for Wojo's offense.
Carton was most frequently used in spot up situations, where his 1.238 was 96th percentile. Just behind Howard (1.412, 99th) but good enough that it won't be a big drop-off.
So what about the other end? First, it's worth keeping in mind OSU was 19th in adjusted defensive efficiency. So their numbers on the whole were good. That said, Carton was among their best numerically.
He allowed 0.688 ppp, which was in the 88th percentile. It was second on the team, barely behind EJ Liddell's 0.687. He is ranked excellent in isolation situations, which is where individual defense matters most.
And while this may not be relevant, OSU was 200th in defensive turnover percentage. Which means he didn't need high ball pressure to be an effective defender, which is good since Wojo never prioritizes turnovers.
