Had quite the experience getting empanadas to go tonight with my fiancée. The story may sound bad, but it was honestly one of our favorite meals we’ve ever had.

Thread 1/
So there’s a family-owned empanada place about a mile away from my fiancée’s apartment. Before Covid-19, I don’t think they’d ever done anything related to delivery services or online ordering.
But they’re legit. They were always packed when we would visit for lunch, and they have a signed poster of Guy Fieri (like this one) which makes me think they were featured in Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. 3/
So we decided to order from them tonight to #SupportLocal and gave their website a try. TL;DR not everything showed up in the cart, so we tried again&accidentally ordered several more empanadas than we’d intended. But it definitely seemed like the website still had some kinks. 4/
All the empanadas—savory and desserts—were in the same box. Which is fine. But our fatal flaw: empanadas are closed and we can’t see what’s inside them. 5/
Four of them had powdered sugar on top, which indicated the desserts. We’d tried to order only one each, but it’s hard to complain about extra desserts. 6/
So our entire meal was basically a game of Russian roulette. We didn’t know what would be what. And we’d both ordered all new things for us, so we didn’t quite remember what we’d ordered anyway. 7/
(This probably isn’t as interesting for anyone else as it was for us but I’m too invested in the thread now) 8/
TL;DR again, some were definitely wrong. Some may have been missing. Some were duplicated. The whole thing was a mystery. We loved them all, but we had no idea what to expect next. Don’t know where the taco-like one came from but by golly we enjoyed it. 9/
Then it was down to 5. Four with powdered sugar. I took a bite of the clean one and.... apple and cinnamon. Like an apple pie, but as a mini calzone. This could only mean one thing: one of the desserts was actually a savory empanada. 10/
The Russian roulette continued. We clinked our powdered empanadas like they were glasses of champagne. And then we took a bite. Hers: oreo, like she’d ordered. Mine: the missing four-cheese jalapeño that had not come up yet. Topped with powdered sugar. 11/
But it was so good. The jalapeño had a nice, hefty kick to it, and the cheeses were mixed together perfectly. (Honestly, I couldn’t really taste the powdered sugar.) 12/
So the whole thing was a hot mess. But it was such an enjoyable experience. Mistakes were made on all sides, but it just seems to be how things are right now. We got to laugh, and we got to have our favorite empanadas that we haven’t had in months. 13/14
