For 7 of the last 8 days at least 750 people in New York State have died after testing positive for COVID19. Evidence from New York City suggests the true scale may be twice as high. As in Italy, the apex can be more of a plateau and deaths lag the slowdown of infections.

3/ In recent days the outlines of the epidemic inside and outside New York State have begun to diverge.
5/ A comparison of the New York City data with comparable analyses from Spain and Italy suggest a baseline of a scale of mortality approximately double that of official COVID19 death toll numbers. 6/ The difference includes both undiagnosed COVID19 fatalities and people dying because of the disruptions caused by the crisis - degraded quality of care for other ailments, people unable or afraid of seeking medical care, acute stress and more.
7/ Meanwhile testing for COVID19 nationwide plateaued around the beginning of the month and has not risen significantly since then.
