While doing layout for the #UnbreakableAnthology Vol 1, I did some sourcing of public domain materials to accompany the BEAUTIFUL art our artists did within these pages.

A thread on how I went about this! (STRAP IN!)

btw, pick up Unbreakable here: http://unbreakablerpg.com/download
I went to various stock art and photography sites (primarily @unsplash) to source photos, and they're great for generic & modern scenes. Do recommend!

But a lot of our adventures take place in a fantasy world.

Adventures in #UnbreakableAnthology are based on Asian folklore of varying eras & centuries of myths.

What better places to go than museums websites and find some sort of root to these fantasy settings?

As an NYC native, I love The MET, so I heavily sourced the @metmuseum's Open Access Works archive. It's searchable by era, continent, medium, etc!

#UnbreakableAnthology features a good array of cultures found throughout Asia.

I took the time to find appropriate/related work from the country of origin of the adventure. If I couldn't do it with spot art or cultural work, I went to stock photos or abstract/generic shapes.
( I think of the only culture mismatch, sourced from this book of water themes, Hamonshu. Water's a big theme in a lot of our Adventures. Also, highly recommend @PublicDomainRev. They curate online museum collections of Public Domain work! )

Doing this, I learned a lot about my fellow Asian-creators cultures! For example, the Nepalese game Bagh-chal - an asymmetric strategy chess-like game where one player is tigers🐅 and the other is goats🐐. I modified this Wikimedia image for @KatKruger's "The Lost Children"
I cite all of the work at the end of the #UnbreakableAnthology, primarily @metmuseum, @PublicDomainRev, @WikiCommons, @unsplash.

Thank you for making work accessible and available online! Public Domain and Creative Commons work provides low-cost but quality art!
When I couldn't find anything, and no stock images would fit, I defaulted to drawing my own, something I used to do a lot more before becoming a professional software engineer. Here are my spot arts for #UnbreakableAnthology !
If you're here, thanks for droppin' into this thread! Everyone part of the #UnbreakableAnthology put a lot of care into their work for this first Volume!
