So I have a few thoughts on the Governor’s actions, but mostly on leadership. https://twitter.com/maniacmiler/status/1250559842890194945
For years, leaders, mostly of one party, have preached sacrifice free America. George Bush asked someone of us for our lives after 9/11, but everyone else he asked to go shopping. And it has only escalated from there.
It seems obvious but two things matter in leadership: what you say and what you do. There’s no such thing as taking what a leader says as seriously but not literally. People have to understand what’s expected of them.
Many leaders have stood up and understood this during the pandemic. This is going to be a period of sacrifice and pain for many Americans. It won’t be gone by summer. It will affect your habits in ways only your grandparents understood.
One leader decided not to. He said we would have a magic pill. It would be gone by summer. Everything will be fine, just keep doing what you’re doing. Unfortunately that person is president.
Today in Lansing was incredibly sad because we saw the result of that: the American people regardless of party will have to give. If both parties don’t make people understand that, people will die: your friends, your family.
It requires real leadership to tell hard truths. We lack so much of it right now. We must sacrifice.
But we do it for each other because the real ethos of America is not rugged individualism but heroism together: on the beaches of Normandy. In the Rouge Plant building planes. Working together and sacrificing is when Americans show what we are made of.
