i am of the opinion... that being responsible and thoughtful with tagging and trigger/content warnings is basic courtesy and empathy, and i mean this for fanfic and mainstream media. no amount of "not ruining the surprise" is worth causing harm to real life people, (1/4)
when that harm could easily be avoided by providing them with the info they need to decide whether or not to engage with certain content. i don't think that should be controversial. we, as creators, owe it to our readers to treat them with a base level of respect. (2/4)
stories might be fake but their impact can cause real, lasting reactions. isn't that a goal of writing, to have a tangible effect on the audience? it feels disingenuous to argue that fiction doesn't affect reality bc it does, there is so much research that shows the way (3/4)
media impacts how we see/engage with the world. the least we can do is try to curate spaces where ppl can safely choose what they engage with. that doesn't mean you can't tell certain stories or explore certain themes, but we have a responsibility to do so with care. that's all.
