Because, of course they did. And @ScottShaneNYT asked all the right Qs in Jan 2018.

And, yet @nytimes is ignoring these declassified footnotes that vindicate their own reporter's excellent instincts.

Watch this remarkable video: (quotes below) 1/9: https://cs.pn/2wIeWgB  https://twitter.com/ChuckRossDC/status/1250533963791306753
Shane says the Cohen to Prague bit in the dossier "bothered him."

He spent time trying to "prove or disprove" it because there were specific details to check.

"Here's the question: If that's not true, who made it up?"

"This was not planted by some Clinton operative..." 2/9
"This was probably concocted by Russian intelligence because of that level of detail."

"When you think about Christopher Steele ... calling his buddies who called their buddies in Moscow to get this information, ... the FSB is certainly capable of following those trails..." 3/9
"...and polluting them with with certain ... disinformation."

What if the Russians hedged their bets and "also carried out an information operation aimed at Donald Trump."

What if "some of the dossier was put there by Russian intelligence with the idea of essentially..." 4/9
"...casting a shadow over Trump. ...If he did nothing, if there was no collusion, it's daunting to think about this as a Russian achievement."

The reaction on the video is, dismissive, to say the least. Groupthink in action. 5/9

At least @kenvogel re-tweeted the @CBS_Herridge piece on the declassified footnotes) 7/9 https://twitter.com/kenvogel/status/1248823975033163779?s=20
And of course, the Grassley-Graham referral from Jan 2018 also pointed to admissions in the London lawsuits that Steele was receiving "*unsolicited*" tips during his work.

So Steele's project was hardly an impenetrable secret op. 8/9 https://twitter.com/JsnFostr/status/1248391841436717063?s=20
Is it time, @RichardGrenell, to conduct a comprehensive review of all source intelligence for additional indications that the dossier was infected by Russian disinformation? 9/9
