I was reflecting on hitches last night, and thinking back to my first.
There is a bit of advice here, and a heads up too.
Gather round, it wonât take long and it may just help someone.

When I first started playing with hitch work I really had no idea what it was like or how to approach it, or how hard it can be the first time. What we are living through is very much like a first hitch for a lot of folks, a bit of an odyssey.

My first hitch was on Parkerâs 246 rig in South Taranaki, drilling Tawa B1. It was the deepest well in the Southern Hemisphere at the time. It was also a complete baptism of fire (almost literally). A very problematic hole that was capped, abandoned, & is now just a paddock.

The deal was 14 days on, 14 off, midnight to midday. A standard deal round here, and a relatively short hitch compared to what I do now. It was more than enough to start with. Especially when the relief crew didnât exist and 14 became work-till-relieved (open ended term)

I had been very eye-on-the-prize to get me through and had cut my emotional cloth to suit. When it became open ended it hit me like a tonne of bricks and I REALLY struggled to finish up. I ended up spread thinner that I had ever been to get through and it was kinda damaging.

First hitches are hard, because you havenât learned how to put your life away in a box, put it on a shelf & go away and do something else for a while before you can take that box down and get that life out and live it again. When you learn how its all wayyyyy easier.

At the moment there are a whole lot of folks âdoing their first hitchâ who donât have that skill & are super focused on getting 4 weeks done & getting their lives back.
Im really worried about that, because I think its going to be more & that could really mess some folks up!

What Im saying is if you have been set on a date to get through, can you spread yourself a bit further (if needs be) without messing yourself up?
Is there extra self care you could do to help if you need to go an extra few miles?
There will be an end & I want to see you there!

Keep an eye on folks in you IRL bubble and extended online bubble. This is all new for most folks and reactions to an extension could come out of the blue and may be silent, especially if folks have been eye-on-the-prize.
Especally look out for folks withdrawing, thats bad!

Just remember, even if it is longer you will get to take that box down & get that life out again. Things may be different, but if they are they will be different for all of us & we are all in it together, we will get through.
Take care and be kind (especially to yourself).

Oh and donât hit the bottle to deal with an extension, thats the worst thing to do, trust me on that if nothing else.
