The adjournment gambit, AFAICT, requires McConnell to acquiesce to a diminishment of the Senate's advise-and-consent role that flies in the face of many years of rhetoric.
It might enable the appointment of some nominees McConnell greatly favors, such as Judge Walker. But it might also enable the appointment of people he silently opposes and can use lack of majority support to keep out of government.
Normally one would assume POTUS had consulted with SML before talking about this idea in public, but that assumption can't be made for DJT.
