Many years ago, I worked as a research assistant to eminent New Zealand historian, Michael King. It was in the early days of email (Michael still printed important ones out) & one of the things I picked up from him is cc'ing in people's bosses
and their bosses' bosses when you are thanking them for a job well done, an extra mile gone, working outside usual hours etc. And be specific - commend their skills, their commitment, and point out when it is more than 'just doing their job'
the latter being particularly important when the person you are thanking is a student, or has less power in the organisation. I think of him every time I do it - and the emails he sent *about* me, to my supervisor, my head of department, the dean.
Having just had the opportunity to send a thank you email like this, I am reflecting on what I learnt, all those years ago. #BeKindAlways
