Just had a conversation with someone who isn’t a compulsive news listener like me, and it’s incredibly startling and worrying how different our perception of the pandemic lockdown is.
For them, it’s obviously overblown, probably some kind of election conspiracy, and seemingly unnecessary.

I did my best to point to the experiences of people I know who are directly involved and hope it’s REALLY BAD ACTUALLY. I think it did give them something to think about.
This is going to be a bigger and bigger issue as we continue. People whose entire experience is not being able to go out, who don’t know anyone involved in the response, who perceive the disconnect between state and federal response as a sign that this is just political drama.
The lack of unified response is a huge part of the problem because it gives the impression of competing realities and makes it easy to conclude that there is no objective truth and this is all about performance.
We already knew that if measures worked, people would then erroneously think we overreacted. In Colorado, we’re at less than 350 dead and less than 8k cases because of measures taken. The vast majority of people here don’t and won’t know anyone personally affected.
I don’t have a solution other than keep sharing the stories of doctors and nurses. Push back conversationally. Keep in mind one of the best responses you can get to conflicting realities is “oh wow, I didn’t know that. I’ll look into that/think about that.”
Just start thinking about it now, how you’ll respond when you encounter this. What stories you can tell.
