Habits are the soul of mental health.

Everything from biology to social environment plays *some* role in our mental health. But for most of us, the thing we have the most control over is our habits.

Here are 4 habits everyone should build to improve their mental health…
1. Be curious about your own mind.

Lasting positive changes to your mental health require self-awareness. But you can’t cultivate self-awareness without curiosity.

Learn to observe and take an interest in your own mind.
2. Be compassionate with your suffering.

Most of us are trained to be hard on ourselves when we fail. And while I’m all for honest self-reflection after mistakes, do it with compassion.

Feeling bad is hard enough without feeling bad about feeling bad.
3. Be flexible in your behavior.

The definition of insanity is doing the same things repeatedly and expecting different results.

Instead, be a scientist in your own life:

Observe what’s not working, formulate a new theory, test it out, and see how it works.
4. Be assertive about your values.

The tragedy of chronic emotional suffering is you become so consumed with alleviating pain that you lose sight of what matter most—your values & aspirations.

Use your reason & values to guide your decisions—your feelings will follow in time.
