One of the big mistakes writers (espec. those trying to break in) make is not knowing WHY they're writing the script theyre writing. We have limited time/energy, so Your choice in projects should have an INTENTION behind it. What purpose is that script supposed to serve for u?
For instance, unless u are a writing duo that will continue as such professionally, DONT Co-write a project with some rando writer you met. You cant use it as a writing sample, you cant use it to get a manager/agent & if u win a contest, u split money & who gets to take the mtgs?
If u wanna be a Nicholl finalist, dont write horror. If u wanna get your first movie made, dont write a $150M period epic. If you wanna win a contest, dont write a 130pg script. If u want a rep, write something that only YOU could write & shows off whats special bout your voice!
This is not to say that you shouldnt write what you want to write. I'm just saying you should know WHY you want to write it. What's it going to do for you? Thats the difference between a Hobbyist and a writer thinking about their CAREER. (End thread)
