Ok, while I think that dismissing somebody's art is generally dotish because somebody's art is self-expression, I also don't think that art being subjective is is any reason not to dismiss my work if you dislike it. In fact, it's criticism that often makes the art better. https://twitter.com/cheynup/status/1250506004191641602
However, I don't think that the criticism being offered here (at least what I've seen) is really valid at all. If anything, all it does is mock the poem without providing a basis for criticism. People criticise romantic poets for being too flowery, people criticise Donne for
being too straightforward- but they at least provide a reason. The poem was written to address a group that does not take time to assess what it defines as high quality and low quality- to challenge their reasonings and provoke responses.
I understand that this may not be a "good" poem to some (shit, I doh even like any of my poems save for a few) but if you're going to say something negative, at least provide a reason. Otherwise, well, read over the poem cuz I think you miss the message
ON THAT NOTE
let's get into what makes a poem "good." Poetry is a word whose definition has been contended forever n ever n ever n ever right? So, as somebody who has on and off been in and around poetry scenes and talked with many of the spoken word poets in Trinidad and Tobago
as well as people who focus more on the written than the performed word (in Trinidad and Tobago and out), I've come to understand that a good poem (this is purely by technical standards because ethics and emotion are another dimension of conversation but let's focus here now)
Is one which employs a proficient command of whichever language(s) it was written in in order to convey its message with clarity. Now, of course this is still very vague and to some people a proficient command may mean the most straightforward words
and simple verbiage, like Hemingway. Others may prefer Keats' flowery language or Baudelaire's complete darkness. That's fine cuz preferences are allowed. Of course, preferences will vary because people have different experiences and different tastes and worldviews etc
Just like I would criticise some poets for literally doing nothing but trying (and failing) to sublimate their horniness or playing to a audience that literally only wants to hear poems about physical contact or romance etc, I expect criticism for anything.
Sorry, last tweet was a sidenote. Anyway, if you doh like anything I write because the words too big for you thas cool. If it seems nonsensical to you because of the words used then that's cool. I don't care if you have a problem with the poem if you didn't catch it in the
