Gonna keep a log of all the films i’ve watched during lockdown plus a little review for anyone wanting cinematic inspo 🎬
THE KID WITH A BIKE (dir. Dardenne Brothers). Quality acting from a child actor which is a highlight for me. Wholesome but equally touching, sad story. Has stayed with me more than I thought it would. Would recommend!!
SNOWPIERCER (dir. Bong Joon-ho).
Super cool interesting concept for a film. Am a big fan of dystopia as a genre, but this film was a bit too actiony for me. Although the anti-capitalist/ establishsment undertones were cool - so an enjoyable watch:)
HAPPY AS LAZARRO (dir. Alice Rohrwacher). Interesting and cool reimagining of an old fable. This film really made me think about the possibility that this is happening at the moment. Profound I know lol. The lead actor as a bit confused the whole time but kinda worked? I like.
DARK WATERS (dir. Todd Haynes). Like Erin Brokovich, but dare I say, better? Considering it gave me sorta legal drama vibes, and I was watching from home, I was engaged! Mark Ruffalo was good. I smell a few Oscar noms..
BEBERIAN SOUND STUDIO (dir. Peter Strickland). Little bit scary!! And lots of fun scenes of vegetables smashing - which is interesting how sounds were made in horror films? Toby Jones - that is all.
THE WAY HOME (dir. Lee Jeong-hyang). I did not like the way this little boy treated his nanny :( angry reacts only. But also cried at the ending. Happy. Wholesome story about the importance of our relationship with our grandparents.
OKJA (dir. Bong Joon-ho). Never thought a film about a girl befriending a super pig would get me in the feels. I Relate to the super pig on lots of levels. I preferred this to snowpiercer. Tilda Swinton has funny teeth.
THE RIDER (dir. Chloe Zhao).
I don’t have much to say about this except it is really sad to see the lengths people will go to to continue their passion. Oh and Cowboys.
MOMMY (dir. Xavier Dolan). This film has been added to my list of fave films. Super interesting story, which is well told through great acting. And some super cool camera orientation moments. All the feels.
MOTHER (dir. Bong Joon-ho). Decent film. Cool story. Told well. Another triumph from Bong Joon-ho.
CITY OF GOD (dir. Meirelles and Lund). Lots of Brazilian samba. I watched this on BoB so was v bad quality :( but true story so bonus points!
POETRY (dir. Lee Chang-dong). Wholesome story. Relatable content rn as i’m writing poetry to cope wirh this lockdown. Another good example of class A acting from older generation South Koreans!
THE FLORIDA PROJECT (dir. Sean Baker). A24 pulling through with that great aesthetic AGAIN. I really like Willem Dafoe. Another class film with a good child actor. First film of the mum too!! And again wholesome and yet super sad, thought- provoking.
PARIS, TEXAS (dir. Wim Wenders). Love an 80s vibe aesthetic. Nice fun country guitar interludes - i’m here for it. Cool story and ending was beaut and wholesome. Tears yep.
TOMBOY (dir. Celine Sciamma). This was a great film. Really got me in the feels. Beautiful story telling. How such a beaut film was told in such a short space of time (80 mins!) I will never know. Dying to see ‘Portrait of a lady on fire’ now...
THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO (dir. Joe Talbot). Sadly this film just didn’t engage me. Probably didn’t help I was making food as watching it. But this film has some great stills. Think I’ll watch again...
THEO AND HUGO / PARIS 05:59 (dir. Olivier Duscastel and Jacques Martineau). The RACIEST opening to a film i’ve ever seen hahahah. Bit of techno too so can’t wrong with that. Cool allusions to myth and love the fact it is all set in the space of an hour and a half!! Like.
GONE WITH THE WIND (dir. Victor Fleming). Well that was a long haul - would recommend watching with snacks and a bottle of Prosecco! Have never seen this, so figured it would be a good time! Was more interesting than I thought it would be! Decent watch...although a bit dated lol
HUSTLERS (dir. Lorene Scafaria). LOVED this - class A movie. Funny, serious and TRUE. J-lo being a bada$$. Lizzo playing the flute. Cardi being Cardi. Oh, and drain the clock not the cock.
THROUGH A BOYS EYES (dir. various). I thought this was one long film but was actually a selection of short films from Spain and France. Some cool, interesting, and disturbing stories at the same time, but about young boys becoming men. So really enjoyed this one!
DOGTOOTH (dir. Yorgos Lanthimos). I really like Yorgos’ films although this one was a bit one note I thought. The concept was cool and the ending was exciting but besides that it didn’t grab me sadly
EMMA (dir. Autumn de Wilde). Not actually a story I know or have read, but, in my post watch internet google wormhole I found out clueless is based on this! Lol. Proud to admit I find Miranda Hart so funny. Good film: fun, lighthearted, and beaut colours!!
FESTEN (dir. Thomas Vinterberg). What a film! Read the play before watching this and thought it was great but this was summin else. Obsessed with stuff that revolves around a family at a dinner table. Major succession vibes too. Love the camera - all shot on a Sony camcorder! 10!
SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE (dir. Park Chan-wook). Cool story but I felt a bit distracted at times. Some cool shots like the one below but I think I preferred old boy...
HEATHERS (dir. Michael Lehmann). I thought this as going to be another rom vom but was pleasantly surprised that the plot was actually... good? Besides being a bit glorify-y I enjoyed this film. Lots of puffy shoulders. Winona Ryder 😍
PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE (dir. Céline Sciamma). Ah man I LOVED it all - everything I thought it would be and more. Such nuanced storytelling and compelling acting. Deffo found one of my new fave directors - so minimalist, aesthetic, and beautifully told 🥰 watch this!!
WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (dir. Taika Waititi). I actually watched the series before the film which must admit I prefer... but this was still funny and Taika Waititi is a bit of a genius isn’t he
LOST IN TRANSLATION (dir. Sofia Coppola). Loved this!! Was a fun story and had made me want to go to Tokyo even more. Scarlett Johansson deffo got it
MAN ON WIRE (dir. James Marsh). First documentary on the list! And honestly my palms were sweaty the whole way 😰 deffo would not advise if you’re scared of heights
IRREVERSIBLE (dir. Gaspar Noé). Once I’d gotten used to the discombobulating (only word I can think of) cinematography this film was good. There were some super difficult, really uncomfortable scenes but it was truthful and authentically performed. And the narrative was poignant
THE HUNT (dir. Thomas Vinterberg). saw the stage production at the almeida last summer and loved it! Interesting story and quite a scary circumstance. Must admit lost interested toward the end as knew what happened but still good film that people should watch!
THE WATERMELON WOMAN (dir. Cheryl Dunye). It’s so important to tell the stories of those whose voices were not able to be heard.
HONEY BOY (dir. Alma Har’el).Really interesting plot based off Shia LaBeaouf’s childhood - he is so under rated as an actor too and gives a great performance. Those scenes with FKA Twigs were so beautifully done. Really enjoyed the dual running narrative across time here too!
REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (dir. Darren Aronofsky). I liked this a lot! The cinematography was super, super cool and some great performances. Audibly gagged too towards the end too so be careful if you are squeamish lol
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (dir. Michel Gondry). Must admit was confused at first but once I figured out what was going on really enjoyed this. Feels odd seeing Jim Carrey in really serious stuff! Sweet ending 🥰
FISH TANK (dir. Andrea Arnold).
I really liked this film - very well told and enjoyed every aspect of it. My blood pressure can’t cope with sneaking into people’s houses - it makes me so scared lol. And California Dreamin is just the vibiest song ever.
THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS (dir. Wes Anderson). I enjoy the visuals and aesthetic of Anderson films soo much. Soundtrack was great too. Enjoyed!
LOVE (dir. Gaspar Noé). I really like the fact that Noé writes, directs, produces AND edits his films. If you are a prude this is not the film for you...lol. But good film all round! (Watch irreversible first I’d say as preferred the plot there).
SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS (dir. Stanley Donen). This was one of my grandad’s fave films so a cute nostalgic Sunday watch. The dancing was super good!
LA HAINE (dir. Mathieu Kassovitz). This film was mentioned in a social geography lecture at uni in 2016 and I finally got round to watching it haha. Enjoyed the narrative and aesthetic. Vincent cassell is a class actor.
THE GRADUATE (dir. Mike Nichols). Can’t believe I haven’t seen this film till now but I LOVED IT. Such an interesting story and was super fun. Great, iconic music too and Dustin Hoffman is the g.
THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY (dir. Anthony Minghella). I’ve never seen this before and thought it was gonna be a cute homage to 50s comedy but it was not. Still enjoyed it - would love to play Tom Ripley!! Mum told me with my quarantine haircut I look like Matt Damon haha
LITTLE JOE (dir. Jessica Hausner). This film was cool especially in the current climate of a virus infected world! A sort of more scientific modern day ‘day of the triffids’. The kinda film you’d analyze in a film class.
CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN (dir. Shawn Levy). This is one of my favourite films ever - and watching this was just so nostalgic and heartwarming 🥰 I laughed and cried and more than anything I LOVE early 00s fashion
PROMISED LAND (dir. Michael Hoffman). This pic wasn’t in the film but loved them from IMDb so had to share. Thought this was gonna be a lighthearted 80s comedy but it ended quite dramatically. Enjoyed it though!
MY FAIR LADY (dir. George Cukor) I’ve never actually seen this before but I read Pygmalion the other day so figured might aswell. A bit classist, and ‘fixer uppy’ - don’t think it’s aged terribly well lols? But the songs were fun and I enjoyed Audrey
THE VVITCH (dir. Robert Eggers). Hmmm ngl I was a but disappointed with this actually. I thought it would be a bit scarier/ have a more interesting plot. I think the lighthouse was better
AND THEN WE DANCED (dir. Levan Akin) I don’t have much to say apart from the fact that you should all watch this film. Oh and Georgian dance looks really bloody hard!!
BEAU TRAVAIL (dir. Claire Denis) I’m usually not a massive fan of war movies cos war but I enjoyed this. The cinematography was awesome and really enjoyed the music (actually from an opera based on the book which the film is also based on!). Final scene 👍🏼
THE LAST STATION (dir. Michael Hoffman). Actually a really interesting story I knew nothing about!! Great performances. Kinda wanna read war & peace but kinda want to enjoy my life x
SUNSHINE ON LEITH (dir. Dexter Fletcher) @aimeegoodall_ has been forcing me to watch this since November and I finally did... I actually know NO songs by the proclaimers lool but cute film!!
BENJAMIN (dir. Simon Amstell). Another wholesome watch today - decent film!
ATLANTICS (dir. Mati Diop). This was a cool film and not really like anything i’ve watched before - story was very interesting with some super poignant themes. I love a good metaphor of the sea too 😍
35 SHOTS OF RUM (dir. Claire Denis). Really enjoy Claire Denis’ artistic vision. Enjoyed this!!
FIRST REFORMED (dir. Paul Schrader) Must admit this was a bit slow for me but some super interesting themes discussed!!
13th (dir. Ava duVernay) i’m using this day to educate myself and hope you will too #blackout “we may have lost the sheets of the Klu Klux Klan but when you see black kids getting show down, then obviously we didn’t out the cancer”
BECOMING (dir. Nadia Hallgreen). Such an inspiring woman and documentary - I really want to read her book
THE HATE U GIVE (dir. George Tillman Jr.) I don’t think I have muxh to say on this film but I haven’t felt so moved by something within the first 20 mins. Now, more than ever, I ask for you to watch this
BELLE (dir. Amma Asante). The puffy dresses and wigs are only a facade - this story is still being told in 2020.
THE FITS (dir. Anna Rose Holmer). Great story - compelling, dynamic and moving
DOPE (dir. Rick Famuyiwa). This was a really funny but thought provoking film. Pls watch everyone x
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE (dir. Justin Simien) another one I would definitely recommend watching - highlighting overt racism and microaggressions in an American college
TANGERINE (dir. Sean Baker) loved this - great film. Also super impressive and cool that it was all shot on an iPhone!?
PARIS IS BURNING (dir. Jennie Livingstone) there were too many still from IMDb I wanted to choose for this one - but I think this sums it up for me. The bravery, defiance, and love of our brothers and sisters in this documentary is so special
WATER LILLIES (dir. Celine Sciamma) another great film from Celine - such simple and beautiful storytelling
BEAUTIFUL THING (dir. Hettie Macdonald) in the face of adversity, love really is a beautiful thing! That’s all I have to say
I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO (dir. Raoul Peck) ‘Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced’
THE HOURS (dir. Stephen Daldry). Read Mrs Dalloway the other week so thought I’d watch this and enjoyed it - power of story telling. Go out and read as much as you can 🥺
FOUR LIONS (dir. Chris Morris) bit of dark satire is always good!
DO THE RIGHT THING (dir. Spike Lee) ‘Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral... because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. The old law of an eye for an eye leaves everybody blind.’ #fightthepower
THE DEATH AND LIFE OF MARSHA P. JOHNSON (dir. David France) it is so upsetting that this is still happening in 2020!? #BlackTransLivesMatter
GIRLHOOD (dir. Celine Sciamma) loved this - Celine is so good at telling stories which feel so real and affecting. Watch!!
MISBEHAVIOUR (dir. Phillipa Lowthorpe) Aw I loved this. ‘Attempts to bring down the patriarchy remain ongoing’ - when people use their voice and stand up, can the master’s house be dismantled 👏🏼👏🏼
SYSTEM CRASHEr (dir. Nora Fingscheidt) what a great film - so well told and acted. Such a sad but warming story. Child actors are just the best!!

MILOU EN MAI (dir. Louis Malle) hmmm ok film lol
XXY (dir. Lucía Puenzo) Really great film - super insightful and sensitive into the challenging subject intersex experience

LADY VENGEANCE (dir. Park Chan- Wok) I enjoyed this!! Great cinematography and honestly motto to live life by - live purely like tofu.
SECOND COMING (dir. debbie tucker-green) cool premise and quality acting!
WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN (dir. Pedro Almodóvar) I really enjoyed this!! Funny, quick paced, good story and costumes looking like a catalogue for desigual

THE PARENT TRAP (dir. Nancy Meyers) one of my fave films of all time - Lindsay Lohan at her peak, amazing content, humor, love, show stopping, LOVE

TENET (dir. Christopher Nolan) got to see this in the cinema with mum and was 🤯🤯 I got confused (shock) but once I researched into i felt shook ... Deffo want to watch again
CUTIES (dir. Maïmouna Doucouré) really great film. Wasn’t a massive fan of the dodgey Netflix dubbing but the plot was super interesting and Twas very creatively engaging and dynamic - would recommend!!
ROCKS (dir. Sarah Gavron) see my thread and also see this film - it’s so poignant, moving and saddening. So great that it was also created anti-hierarchically with a focus on the community and the people this story is telling
ETERNAL BEAUTY (dir. Craig Roberts). I didn’t think this thread would still be going 7 months later but here we are. A really beautifully told story which felt personal, and nuanced - with some great performances from the whole ensemble. Loved it!
