You know how folk on Facebook are doing this "10 albums" thing? I'm enjoying seeing people I know from back home picking the same LPs. Floodland, by the Sisters, was a massive Clackmannanshire record. To paraphrase @reversediorama, it was tough being Andrew Eldritch in Alloa.
Re that last tweet, here, for the Alloa, Alva, Tullibody, Menstrie, Sauchie & Fishcross heads, are ten Clacks bangers. These are the songs you'd hear at the alternative nights in Teejay's, and sometimes at Peppe's. The legendary Rockers' Rave Ups I knew less well ...
1) Temple Of Love - Sisters. 2) Freak Scene - Dinosaur Jr. 3) REM - Stand. 4) Kennedy - Wedding Present. 5) Debaser - Pixies. 6) Alternative Ulster - SLF. 7) The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary. 8) The Passenger - Iggy. 9) Heartache - Gene Loves Jezebel. 10) Spellbound - Siouxsie.
These songs were *our* songs, like no one in any other village or wee town had a claim on Freak Scene; it wasn't about them, it was about us. All the weird kids. The ones Jarvis later anthemised in Misfits. "When I need a friend it's still you," we'd sing, pointing to each other.
