I've been going through some old China photos that make me smile, and wanted to start a thread here to share them with you all. I'll be posting ~1 per day to this thread.

First one: Recycling guy on his bike, Xi'an 友谊路, 2010
China pic, day 2:

Shijiazhuang, Zhaotuo Park, 2013. This guy was the most elegant kicker of the 毽子 (Chinese hackey sack) that I ever had the honor of watching.
China pic, day 3:
Just a dude defrosting his steamroller with a flamethrower. You know how it is. 甜水园东街, November 2015.

Took this pic on a day when I walked from the east 5th ring road to the west 5th road.
China pic, day 4:
Migrant workers sleeping in the tunnels they're building outside the Xi'an city wall's south gate, 2013.

I'd hitchhiked from Hangzhou to Xi'an and stayed w/ a friend for a month. Took this during a drunken night ramble around the city on my last night there.
China pic, day 5:

A young 帅哥 w/ an iPhone 7 haircut.

Met this guy in rural Shaanxi while researching a story on a @StanfordREAP program that retrained one-child-policy enforcers as early childhood educators for left-behind children: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/china-rural-education-reap_n_55df2fdee4b029b3f1b1cc9f
China pic, day 6:

A giant Christmas Tree and the Xi'an Wild Goose Pagoda, December 2015. Took this from a restaurant during a boozy baijiu brunch celebrating the birth of my frisbee teammate's kid.
China pic, day 7:

67 year old super-athlete Geng Zhi doing a headstand in Beijing's Tiantan Park, 2014.

I made a whole video of freakishly athletic Chinese grandparents early in my time at @HuffPost. Putting us young guns to shame:
China pic, day 8:

Western Beijing, seen from the top of the hill in Jingshan Park, 2015. That park has always been my favorite place in the city.
China pic, day 9:

Looking east from Xi'an Railway Station, October 2015. My caption for this photo when I posted to WeChat at the time: "今天在陕西到山西的车上带了个赛百味三明治,一个泡面,两瓶C100果汁,一瓶五粮液白酒 #幸福"
China pic, day 10.

Getting my ear cleaned at People's Park in Chengdu. I was in Sichuan running around reporting on a few different stories. Finally took a lazy Saturday in the park: watching the people, getting my ears cleaned, and reading Waiting by Ha Jin (great book).
China pic, day 11:

"Emergency Brick" on the floor of the 707 bus in Xi'an. The characters on it are 救急, roughly meaning "use in emergency." It was the local version of the little glass-breaking hammers, held to the ground by two pegs. Gotta love the practicality.
China video, day 12:

My 74-year-old dad trying his best to regurgitate a Chinese sentence that I taught him in a Xi'an cafe, 2015. He speaks/reads 7 languages, and starting around 2013 made a very noble attempt at learning Chinese.
爸爸加油!
China pic, day 13:

Kazakh students dancing at the after-party for an ultimate frisbee tournament, Wuhan 2010. My first trip to Wuhan mean a lot to me, so I wrote this essay in Chinese about it: https://medium.com/@mattsheehan88/%E4%B8%80%E4%B8%AA%E8%80%81%E5%A4%96%E5%85%B3%E4%BA%8E%E6%AD%A6%E6%B1%89%E7%9A%84%E4%B8%80%E4%BA%9B%E5%9B%9E%E5%BF%86-an-americans-memories-of-wuhan-f830a1985086
China pic, day 14:

Checking into a hotel that required a face scan, Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou, 2016.

I was freaked out that the front desk was scanning my face. The front desk lady was freaked out that I was taking a picture of them scanning my face.
China pic, day 15:

Guests at a rural wedding in Tengzhou, Shandong, 2016.

I interviewed the groom, a migrant worker and security guard, for the first story I reported in China for HuffPost. We stayed in touch and he invited me to his wedding two years later.
China pic, day 16:

Plato and Aristotle debate the merits of JD deliveries, Xi'an, 2015.

My friend's 小区 in Xi'an signaled it's lofty ambitions by building statues of famous philosophers all around the exterior.
China pic, day 17:

High-speed train, somewhere between Nanjing and Beijing, 2017.

Whichever mid-level 交通部 official took the bribe to have this ad staring at every passenger on every high-speed train in China needs to be investigated ASAP for serious violations of discipline.
China pic, day 18:

Negotiating with the subway police, Halloween 2012.

Every Halloween night there was a massive costume party on Line 2 subway in Beijing. In 2012, I was dressed as cartoon sheep 喜羊羊 and stumbled into the role of negotiating on behalf of the subway party.
