#GudumbaShankar - A fan's POV thread. (P.S:Neither are the tweets written in the thread research based facts nor are they excerpts from anybody in the cast & crew. The tweets are purely written from a fan boy perspective)
After johnny's debacle, it would be understandable that PK is advised to cater to masses with his next project. Rather than taking the conventional route of choosing a commercial pot boiler like gabbar singh. The artist in him opted for a comedy of errors plot.
So how do you mix a pot boiler with a plot that opts for comedy of errors. Pick the protagonist's character from the potboilers. Shankar - an orphan who opts to loot or scam bad guys to make money falls into trouble and shouldn't be recognized for a while (typical)
more often than not, the protagonist's characters in pot boilers do blue collar jobs or are into activities that are on the other side of the law. How can a criminal be defined as a hero then? (By having strong morals, simple).
Shankar's character is defined by himself in one sentence ( Intha bewarse ga dress eskunna kuda nannu gentleman ankodam nee tappu). Of course one dialogue was not good enough for the most to understand his character in those days and he was criticized for his looks by most.
Next - His strengths - Manipulative, strategic. Weaknesses - He is not physically strong. This is strongly established in the forest fight scene where he singles out each goon and attacks them rather than hitting all of them in a single location like a mass hero does.
It is the same reason why the climax sequence is staged like a real life brawl rather than a fight sequence. There's not a single sequence that shows that shankar is physically strong. It is probably the reason why PK chooses to fool ashish vidyarthi rather than confronting him.
Next. He falls for gauri, who falls for him too. Yes, she was a damsel in distress but shankar never tries to impress her by doing something out of his comfort zone, falling for shankar is completely the female character's choice
Infact when gauri tells shankar that she loves him, he refuses to oblige saying that he is a misfit and walks away. He only walks back into her life after knowing that her life is going to be even more miserable if he doesn't save her. Here comes Kalyanji
Now, a proper justification to change his looks and look differently because he needs to look convincing enough as a rich wedding planner. He cashes in on ashish vidyarthi's weakness, a pandit and enters into the mansion to screw up things.
Comedy of errors is not a new genre to Telugu audience. EVV and Jandhyala are two people who can be hailed as undisputed kings when it comes to this genre, but introducing a massier character into a household of goons is the newer touch that is added.
This very thin touch of a protagonist having a massier edge and stepping into a household of goons to create comedy of errors is later adapted into many more films like (Aata, ready, loukyam being few names among many)
I'm still amazed at how they stuck to the plot even in terms of music, there isn't even a single song in the second half that cuts to an outdoor setting in its entirety. The song's premise starts in the same setting and cuts to outdoor for a little relief. That's it.
Everything falls into place and shankar marries gauri. Then enters the closing sequence, rather than closing it up with a 5 minute fight, kalyan opted to make it look like a street brawl, Notice and you'll see shankar hitting his own side kick when he says he can't drive :D
The movie has its own run time flaws but it still remains as one of the top picks to many 90s generation kalyan fans. It's not his commercial success that defines him for us, his ability to play around with many movie making crafts is what we rooted for to begin with.
Now being a kalyan fan, how can you not get something more when you are looking for it in those days. The end credits begin with a rap song, An english rap song to close the end credits of a telugu movie. Again, that's kalyan for you. THE END
Still scrolling and seeing this tweet too ! Here , click on this if you're interested. We were insanely not so we reacted to cringe worthy telugu rap songs
