You might have seen a few articles about Governor Parson's decision to close his briefings to reporters. At the end of last month, both the Missouri Press Association and Missouri Broadcasters Association asked him that reporters be allowed to attend.
Obviously, not every newspaper in the state could or would send a reporter to the briefing. But it's crucial for all of us that reporters be allowed in, the urgent questions be asked, and Missourians get to know more on a timely basis.
The instance that was a real shock to many of us came after the letter was sent, when Parson announced last week that schools would remain closed through the rest of the school year. It's a disservice to all Missourians that no questions could be asked/answered on the subject.
Currently, Parson is able to choose which questions he answers from those pre-submitted. You don't get to hear which questions are being asked but not answered.
We are in a time of both health and economic crisis, which means it's more crucial than ever that the government is transparent with residents. There are ways to ensure safety while still being open with the public. Reporters must be allowed in.
