Note that Biden's weakness isn't " #NeverBiden voters on the left," who are minuscule in number.
It's that, among Democrats overall, there isn't a lot of excitement about his candidacy. That will reduce turnout, fundraising, volunteering at the margins.

This is his greatest weakness going forward, that a large share of the party - the progressive half - appears to be supporting the ticket rather grudgingly. The logical thing to do is use the VP slot to directly address this weakness, and excite progressives.
Since Biden wants as close to 100% Dem turnout as he can get, it's not good enough to have Democrats say "Well, I guess he's better than Trump." He needs to have people AMPED to go vote. Putting Warren on the ticket will help amp up the exact people who are currently least amped.
