So much of the distrust on the right towards experts comes from the left trying to use "experts" to advance their agenda. Whether it is abortion or climate, the left trots out partisans. The media gives them the veneer of expert status. Notice we haven't heard from Greta lately.
Leftwing anti-capitalist activists have, for years, taken the mantle of climate expertise to advocate wrecking global western economies because New York City was otherwise going to flood by 2015. Time and again, their dire predictions didn't come true.
On public health, the Malthusian experts used by the media have warned we must abort the planet to stave off mass starvation.
It is no wonder so many on the right are now skeptical of expertise even now with this pandemic. But that doesn't mean there aren't real experts who have real expertise.
People on the right need to grasp a healthy level of discernment and figure out who is using real expertise, some of which we may not want to hear, and some of which we know is partisan nonsense.
Right now, I have a hard time believing the entire global community of experts are wrong, particularly when I can see for myself the mortality rate of COVID-19 is so high and hospitalization of infected people averages 20%.
Clearly, we need to get the economy going again. But right now, we also need to find a balance that we haven't found yet. If we can't find it in the next few weeks, I do think we're going to have to shift towards reopening areas minimally impacted.
But, on the specific skepticism of experts, there are people who claim to be experts who think the world is flat. I see no reason to give them viability anymore than I think we need to give experts viability who think COVID-19 is just a flu.
