Last night's video gathering on #SiteC, #LNG & #fracking in BC was fascinating, both for newcomers & those steeped in the issues. Gripping presentations by @BenParfittCCPA & energy expert Eoin Finn of @MySea2Sky. I'm going to summarize what was said, & add some proposals. #bcpoli https://twitter.com/Lidsville/status/1250212708244262913
Renowned BC journalist @BenParfittCCPA started off with a presentation on the danger to our dams in NE BC - dams that supply much of our electricity - from the extensive & perilously close fracking in that region, #fracking that causes ongoing vibration and quakes. #bcpoli #SiteC
Fracking threatening our dams is a huge story needing further coverage - you may remember Parfitt's breaking revelations in Jan/Feb. about a coverup of fracking damaging the Peace Canyon dam above #SiteC. Story got overshadowed by the - related - #CoastalGasLink protests. #bcpoli
By the way, "coverup" is my term, not Ben's, but that's effectively what this was. Those like @daveunger3 who tried to raise the alarm about the threat to BC Hydro dams were shut down & 2 #bcpoli Ministers buried it. Stories here:
"Peace River Frack-up" https://www.policynote.ca/frack-up/
@BenParfittCCPA's maps showed a rapid increase in fracking/quakes in NE BC, all around our dams, since 2004 when modern fracking took off. And he said fracking quake reports don't give full picture because @NRCan & other bodies each only measure certain things. Fuller maps coming
Parfitt showed that fracking operations are far more extensive & destructive across N.E. BC than we probably realize, that injecting waste fracking solution into disposal wells also causes serious quakes, and that fracking is destroying far more top BC farmland than is admitted.
.In discussing the catastrophic Old Fort landslide 1 km from #SiteC at the tail end of 2018, Parfitt showed how unsafe industrial activity around our dams is allowed to happen: the same BC govt bodies investigating unsafety are ALSO responsible for the offending activity. #bcpoli
..That is, The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources is responsible for both #SiteC and fracking, and the Deputy Minister of EMPR, Dave Nikolesjin, a BC Lib leftover, is a #SiteC booster who also sits on BC's Oil & Gas Commission regulator. That's just for starters.
In short, serious conflict of interest is built into the way our BC gov't ministries are set up & precludes any level of safety. It also encourages a sleight of hand whereby #SiteC is greenwashes fracking/LNG operations, even though it'll electrify neither. All under 1 ministry.
Ben said more but I've covered his arguments in the past (links to those threads & his articles at the end) so I'll move on to energy finance expert Eoin Finn's presentation. It overlaps with Ben's, but explains how neither fracking/LNG nor #SiteC are remotely financially viable.
