one thing I think we need to keep in mind when reviewing works authored by diaspora is that experiences are going to vary widely due to a variety of factors

you can say that it's "inaccurate" to throw dinner parties around the Lunar New Year vs. family gatherings, for example, and it may be inaccurate, for you. for me, LNY was a talent show and potluck. only in recent years has it become a proper family gathering

and 1) the Chinese school in my area was a good gathering/organizational point for a huge holiday 2) both parents worked and of course we don't get LNY off in the US, so hence potlucks and 3) I can see dinner parties as a way for the local Chinese community to gather

anyway IDK what an immigrant community does in location X of an adoptive country may differ from what another immigrant community from the same origin does in location Y, and there could even be differences between locations

like in this specific example, yes, Lunar New Year is for family, but needing to adapt to a new country's culture is a thing, and also using the occasion to party with your fellow immigrants in an adoptive country doesn't seem like a stretch at all?

I mean, I feel like this sort of thing is always going to set diaspora works up to fail, and while I dislike bad representation as much as anyone else...we still don't have a LOT of diaspora media here. I don't know why we have to judge so harshly and hypercritically.

like, folks, while you're bashing Alan Yang for being inauthentic even though he's relating his own experiences and his dad's experiences, you're making it that much harder for other diaspora folks to create works based on what they know. think about that for a sec, will you.

correction: when I said "between" locations, I meant "within" locations, as I can definitely attest with my own community. d'oh.
