I'm sitting here waiting for Chancellor Dr. Merkel's press conference to begin.
If the rumors are true she'll announce a seriously stupid COVID-19 strategy.
So I hope the rumors are not true. Please.
PLEASE.
Ok, they are live.
She's saying a lot of thanks.
She's doing that very well.

She's talking about caution. And that we have only accomplished a little bit and should not be too hasty.

C'mon, Dr. Merkel, spill it! I want to know!
There we go:
- social distancing will continue, people who don't do that can be punished
- there will be a "recommendation" to use face masks on public transport and when going shopping
- there will be individual rules for retirement homes to decrease social isolation for seniors
- schools and day cares will stay closed until May 4th
- then there'll be a slow and step by step opening of schools with preference for pupils who are preparing for final exams
- churches stay closed for now
- shops smaller than 800m² will be allowed to open but they'll need concepts for hygiene and social distancing

Every 14 days there'll be a review of this strategy and changes will be announced based on infection rates.

End of Dr. Merkel's announcement.
Mr. Söder is adding a few details.
- shopping malls stay closed
- restaurant and bars stay closed
- emergency day care for working parents shall be more widely available
- primary schools up and including 3rd grade and day care for younger children will be the very last to open
- he claims that those young kids cannot be as hygienic as older ones
Answering questions from the press now.
Dr. Merkel explains that we're now at a point (if I understood her correctly) where on average one infected person infects one more person and that if we had 1 person infect 1.1 people we would be at our ICU limit in October.
If 1 person infects 1.2 persons then we reach that limit in July (or did she say June?).

Not a lot leeway.
Dr. Merkel also explains how to sterilize cloth masks.
Disclaimer: I'm not a big fan of Dr. Merkel's party (CDU). Or rather I don't like them at all. They are far too right-wing for me.
But I do like Dr. Merkel.
Or at least I like her more than many other politicians. :)
They now talk about Germany's federal system.
Mr. Söder of Bavaria is saying thanks to other states who more much less affected by the virus (Bavaria is a hotspot) that they still went along with actions against the virus and therefore supported the whole system.
Dr. Merkel and Mr. Söder pointed out that this is a "marathon" and we will have to deal with the whole virus situation for many more months to come. And that an effective treatment or even a vaccine is still far away. And that these are the only two things that can help quickly.
A tracking or tracing app is also still far away as it will need to be approved by the RKI ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Koch_Institute) as effective and will need to comply with all privacy laws.
And that's it for now. I have not tweeted every little detail of this press conference but it should give an overview.

Now I'll read good night stories to me kids.
