We love comparing ourselves to Britain's Covid-19 response - but what happens when we compare Ireland to similar sized countries in Europe. 👇 #rtept #tonightvmtv #cblive
Let's compare Ireland with Denmark & Norway.
First up - population.
Okay, so population wise we're very similar to Denmark & Norway - we probably have a similar amount of confirmed cases....
But we're testing more than the Danes & Norwegians - after all we're following the South Korean model according to the Taoiseach...
Ok, but the media are constantly praising the Irish government's response - our number of deaths must be lower than Denmark & Norway's....
And what about the death rate per population...
Well we all know the issues with our health service - our ICU capacity is probably not up to the standard of Denmark & Norway...
We're a small island - our population is probably far more dense than Denmark, which makes it easier for the infection to spread.
VERDICT: It's easy to compare Ireland to failure across the ponds and feel good about ourselves.
Unfortunately the reality of the government's response isn't as great as portrayed by the media when we compare Ireland to similar sized countries in Europe.
