I& #39;m so sick of Texans rage posting online demanding the economy "reopen" or claiming this is all an overreaction. The worst is yet to come here folks. If we hadn& #39;t been semi-distancing, however poorly, until now, there& #39;d be a lot more deaths. Maybe someone you know and love.
The point is, it& #39;s not about any ONE of us. We need collective action, compassion and sacrifice with long-term community survival in mind. What do a reopened economy and sustained jobs matter if thousands lose their loved ones in exchange for our selfishness?
I just can& #39;t wrap my mind around this Faustian bargain so many are proud to undertake. I& #39;ve know hunger. Living meal to meal, day to day. Unemployment. Insecurity. But I& #39;ve also known death. I looked my grandmother in the eyes as she took her last breath. Which is worse?
I& #39;m not willing to sacrifice my last surviving grandparent, who& #39;s been on lockdown in her nursing home in LA for weeks, because someone doesn& #39;t trust the NIH or CDC and is impatient to get back to work. I& #39;m not willing to sacrifice my mother, a cancer survivor, or my father.
I won& #39;t let my sisters - one of whom is a nurse and daily risks her life to serve those in need and the other who was deemed an essential worker, forced to show up to her office each day despite positive cases - die young because someone thinks this is all a joke.
If you all get your way and the pandemic reaches your doorstep in more rural areas, rather than remaining concentrated in America& #39;s urban centers, please understand how terrible your reality will become. There is a very real resource discrepancy here.
How long does it take you to reach the nearest supermarket? Pharmacy? Hospital? How many doctors have chosen to stay and serve rural communities? Rather than competing over thousands of ICU beds and ventilators, you& #39;ll be fighting over the allocation of a mere 5, 10.
