i will never forgive AOS for reducing Uhura to " Spocks Girlfriend "
i have many complaints about AOS, but this is one of the biggest
like
Uhura is an intelligent woman, powerful in her own right- certainly holds herself in a different way than TOS, but that& #39;s more likely a writing thing
she& #39;s a communications officer and it& #39;s blatantly said iirc that she& #39;s one of the most talented in her field
but that& #39;s somewhat pushed to the side in order to show a pretty stilted " romance " between her and Spock. Not only that, but making it so that she pushed him to put her on the enterprise makes it seem like she& #39;s not a woman of her own achievements
idk man, that exchange in itself felt really bad too. It almost makes it sound like she used Spock to get her there. It& #39;s just kinda another case of writing directly contradicting itself in these films
like, Uhura is incredibly skilled in her field, so that should get her the position she wants, right? Wrong, she has to tell off her boyfriend for making an understandable move in trying to to appear favouritist in his job and get him to put her on the ship
it& #39;s a similar problem that i have with how Jim was written. I can full accept, believe and encourage that Jim& #39;s an adrenaline junkie in some respects- but other than saying " Jim has a genius level IQ " and of course the kobayashi maru, Jim& #39;s never really shown to be super smart
both of these characters are said to be skilled and intelligent, but neither are shown to be particularly incredible- I believe it& #39;s perfectly possible to write a super intelligent adrenaline junkie and a intelligent woman who happens to work on the same ship as her partner
but AOS didn& #39;t do that, it said one thing and showed another
I enjoy the movies to an extent, and frankly love the cast, but the writing left a lot to be desired, especially in the character writing department
I have 0 complaints for the cast choice tho, AOS can be congratulated on that
