Quick thread from being pissed off during a walk: "STAY AT HOME" is smug, entitled and plain wrong messaging. Here's why: 1/
We don't want everyone to stay home. The people delivering your Ocado shopping, NHS workers, powerplant workers, etc. We want these to go into work so the whole economy doesn't collapse and so other (often richer) people can seek to minimise the spread 2/
Moreover, the message, by suggesting a solution, misdiagnoses the problem. It, in effect, it simplifies and individualises what is a collective effort. And here's the smugness - the idea that if everyone stayed home everything would be hunky-dory. 3/
That failure to "STAY HOME" (it's in caps because it's a command to other citizens) becomes the cause of the continued spread, rather than, say, the government's handling of the affair. A structural failure becomes an individual (moral) failing. 4/
What I think is worst is that it plasters over the diversity of experiences people are having during this quarantine. The narrative has become dominated by relatively wealthy people working from home with their family, and generally a garden. 5/
