Your fic will flourish if it is well researched; as a Chinese born and bred I often find it amusing that characters aren’t conservative etc, etc, that is not like Chinese culture in fics that are SET IN IR AFTER CANON AU. Some of these things that one has not research may be

offensive to the Chinese born and bred kid reading it.

In Chinese culture (feel free to call me out, I’m taking all call outs) family and community come before self. Filial piety comes before ALL. Promiscuity is sin, PDA is nono, lack of ancestral and godly worship and respect

is also sin.

Okay, take JC for example. He doesn’t want to be better than WWX JUST BECAUSE he can. He wants to PROVE HIMSELF to be the best so that his dad would notice him, and make his family proud.

He doesn’t want dishonour on his family (if that’s the one thing Mulan got

right), or on his Sect as the heir. So the struggle to get good grades, perform well, and be a good kid is resting on his duty to perform for his community and his family. Not himself.

About JFM noticing him—what i mean is that he wants his dad to be PROUD of him as his son.

He doesn’t want him to praise him and favour him for no reason at all; although that’s what he should have gotten. He wants to make his parents proud that they have a good and filial son, that works hard and earnestly for the good of his people and family. Trust me, I have that

kind of upbringing as well.

To him, even a simple good job or head pat would be enough. No fancy feast or celebration would be needed; that’s not the Chinese way of congratulating someone, in my experience.

So? The conflict with WWX? That’s not because he’s jealous that his bro got more attention; he’s mad that his bro, WHO ONCE PROMISED HIM that the two of them would lead the would lead the Sect together, abandoned him and suddenly turned that down?

That’s his perspective.

Obviously prior to knowing that the golden core was not his. Essentially, WWX defected YMJ Sect. He tore away family ties (adopted), friendships, relations publically and politically (with other sects) and became a lone wolf.

And so? JC is furious. He wants to protect WWX, but

now that he’s left, he’s essentially lost a family member, brother, leader, influence and strength in battle, etc. He can’t protect or defend his name anymore, since he defected. Doing so would make YMJ side with WWX, who wasn’t so nicely looked at, making them lose their stand

as one of the Great Four Sects. And remember, this is when LP burned down and JC had to rebuild everything again. YMJ is weak AF, most of the kids from YM and those who survived the battle are there. They don’t have insane forces to fight, not as much as QHN, GSL, LLJ.

Political stance and intelligence, as well as choosing what to do wisely to minimise loses and ensure gains (or a balance, if there’s no choice) is key.

He never wanted to kill his brother because of jealousy and all that. No. Perhaps it was the mindset that maybe, if I end my

brother’s life, maybe he will reincarnate into a better life. Maybe it will end his suffering, the suffering of the people, and all this hatred. He’s also doing it out of duty as leading the battle against WWX. Mind you, his bro was crazy and it was impossible for him to back

down OR recover from demonic cultivation. It’s either WWX die by suicide, or JC. And if it’s JC? He can make it smooth and easy. He never wanted to hurt WWX. If he did, he would have a long time ago.

Why JC IS SO FUELLED BY RAGE, is that that rage is due to misunderstandings

and wanting to find out why he was wrong, why WWX turned to demonic cultivation with no reason at all. (before he found out about the core). Later, he was mad at WWX about the core BECAUSE WWX could have told him. But no. This is a betrayal on a familial level, as brothers.

JC feels like it’s his fault that WWX always had to save his ass. He feels indebted. Not that nonsense about being jealous.

One last thing. MDZS was written in WWX’s perspective as an unreliable narrator. You already know that he lost his memory, you still want to take him word

for word? Everything is in his perspective and how he perceives it. People have different perceptions. If one looks at it objectively and formulate based on the general consensus of how a character acts, this is how you come to my conclusion that JC is as such.

So to say that this mindset is not Chinese is like saying you’re not human.
