First evidence on working hours and home office under social distancing restrictions for Western Europe (or world-wide?). Based on our survey in the LISS panel March 20-31 and joint with @RadostHoller @LenaJanys https://sites.google.com/site/bettinasiflinger/">https://sites.google.com/site/bett... @c_zimpelmann. Results:
1) Total hours worked decline by 13%.
2) The self-employed are hit harder than the employed; their hours decline by 23% on average; 10% report 0 hours. They are much more worried about financial difficulties in the short run than employees are about job loss.
3) Employees& #39; hours are reduced by 11%; zero hours reported by 4% of them. This is much smaller than in U.S. and U.K., short-time work seems to be kicking in here @abicadams @MartaGolin @TeodoraBoneva1 @landais_camille @giulia_giupponi
3) The highly educated reduce hours much less because they relocate to the home office. Their home office shares go from 15% to 68%.
4) Many with low education fall in one of two categories: Either classified as essential worker = similar hours to before, mostly at the usual workplace, implies higher infection risk. Or they face large reductions in hours because they cannot substitute with home office hours.
5) This is visible across sectors: Two clusters in terms of shares of workers with tertiary education and home office shares early in the crisis
6) Looking ahead in the short term, 4.6% expect to loose job by June; 17% expect it will only be there because of government support schemes.
Are our macro friends missing any facts to feed their models? @BachmannRudi @christianbaye13 @mokuhn @makro_philip @jonasdovern (including @apeichl thanks to his job description https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😉" title="Winking face" aria-label="Emoji: Winking face">)
