The main reasons I'm hearing from the right, e.g. @RepTrey, to support reopening the economy ASAP are that recessions are bad (no shit) and that #COVID2019 is only dangerous to #immunocompromised people, so that shouldn't prevent the rest of us from going about our business. 1/7
I doubt they're fully grasping who that might entail, though. 40% of Americans are #obese; 20% are severely obese. 45% of Americans have #hypertension. ~35M Americans have #diabetes. ~33M have been diagnosed with some form of chronic #lung disease. 2/7
Nearly half of all American adults have some form of #cardiovascular disease. ~14% have a form of chronic #renal disease. ~14% of adults are current #smokers; another ~25% are former smokers. 3/7
These are all considered to be comorbidities with #COVIDー19, making the disease significantly more dangerous. 4/7
Allowing for the fact that there's probably a lot of overlap in these classifications, it's still likely that 1/4 to 1/2 of all adults in the U.S. are at risk of serious health consequences should they catch #Covid_19. 5/7
And that's not even including #seniorcitizens, who would have to be completely isolated from a fully open society. So, to those pushing for a fast reopening of the economy, I say, You pick. 6/7
You specifically point out which of your friends and family you're willing to lay on the altar of #EconomicRecovery. And if you're not willing to do so, then please shut the fuck up and let the experts handle this. [end thread]
