/ Many learner-centered leaders we’ve spoken to over the past two weeks have been proud that their efforts pre-pandemic have provided the space to prioritize the health and well-being of their young learners.
/ Regardless of the socioeconomic status or geographical setting of their communities, they had prioritized equitable access to learning at their physical learning environments and at each child’s home (e.g. wifi/computers) at the very beginning of their transformation efforts.
/ No matter how often we ask, how the transition to at-home learning has gone, the answers come with a simple “our community was well-prepared to make the switch,” often taken no more than a day or two to adjust to this new way of learning.
/ Of course, they all miss the camaraderie of learning in-person as a community and have found it most challenging to engage young people in open-walled learning. But, even those challenges have brought creative solutions.
/ @MetSchool we learned of one young learner who was tackling a big project with @Habitat_org. His work has now transitioned to building a doghouse for his grandmother’s dog and making “how to” videos to document his progress along the way.
/ @SpringCSchool they organized “group runs” where an adult mentor would create a group call and everyone can run from their respective homes and hold conversations over the phone as they run.
/ @RSSinformation—where everyone from principals to bus drivers are included in their learner-centered professional development efforts—Supt. @lynn_moody told us a powerful story about the “spirit lifitng” impact their bus drivers are having...
/ on young people when delivering meals to individual homes. @DirectorEmbark told how his learners voted to keep their learner-run business open and reduce all prices by 75% to help serve first responders in Denver.
