I have heaps of time for The Guardian & many who work there. But if ‘free’ doesn’t work with 2billion page views a month, it ain’t ever going to work. Hence the need for voluntary donations despite the paper’s trustafarian status.
I know people dislike paywalls & they really dislike having to pay for more than one paper/magazine. But, you know, in 1990 - before the industry lost its mind in the dash to "free" - you had to pay for *everything* & no-one thought that irksome.
And newspapers are also *astonishingly* cheap. A digital subscription to @thetimes & @thesundaytimes costs less than £1 a day. Today's paper features more than 120 stories & lots more besides that.
